Mount Vernon {George Washington's Estate}

We finally made it to Mount Vernon and finished our Virginia Bucket List on Saturday!

It rained the entire time and we were all soaked but still spent 4 1/2 hours exploring George Washington's estate!

Stained glass windows inside the building you enter the property at.

Waiting in line for the mansion tour. B said his hat was at home, but was really in the car the entire time, so we made him a tunic hat from my cardigan!

The Mansion. It has 9 guest rooms and had so much original (to the house) furniture and art inside!

The kitchen is located to the right of the main house in a separate building to keep the house from getting too hot. (This was the only room you could take pictures in.)

West side of the Mansion

There's Maryland across the Potomac River!

Wet and cold:)

I loved the covered walkways on each side of the house.

Splashing in puddles was a favorite of B's!!

Inside the museum there were life size replicas of George Washington at different ages. They have done extensive research on what his face really looked like through molds, so that was pretty cool!

My husband's favorite part was seeing the actual denture he wore in his mouth! They look so uncomfortable!
Fun fact: When George was sworn into office, he only had one real tooth left in his mouth!

Baaing at the sheep!:)

I love roads covered in green tree canopies like this! - Virginia has a lot of them!

George and Martha's tombs were the last thing we saw and they are on the property as well.
We also watched a couple movies at the museums and during one of them your seat would vibrate with the gun shots and cannons and it also "snowed" in the theater during the snow scene!

I'm so glad we made time to visit Mt. Vernon. We were a little afraid it was going to be just another old house (we have visited a lot of those the last four years) but it wasn't!

Things to Do & See in Washington DC

Now that the holidays are over we like to plan what we will be doing for spring and summer break! This year's break will mostly consist of moving but last summer we did a lot of sight seeing with my family when they came out to visit us.

Since we only live two hours away from Washington DC we have visited many times and have our favorite places to take visitors. We always look at the monuments outside which typically takes a minimum of two to three hours depending how fast of walkers you are!

If you are going for just a day, here are the monuments you must see!
The White House
Lincoln Memorial
Washington Monument
WWII Memorial

Looking across the WWII Memorial to the Washington Monument
It's so tall!

The museums have some really neat things inside of them, plus they get you out of the heat if you are visiting in the summer and they are all free!

Museums we love:
The National Archives Museum has the real copy of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and the Constitution.
The Air and Space Museum is always a favorite for boys!
The Museum of American History has Dorthy's shoes from the Wizard of Oz and so many others things that anyone would find interesting!
The National Zoo is a fun place for kids and has lots of animals!
Other great museums are Museum of Natural History and the National Holocaust Museum (I don't recommend taking children here).

In the Museum of Natural History.

The trains are B's favorite part about the Museum of American History!

The Washington DC LDS Temple isn't in the National Mall, but is close by in Kensington, Maryland. It is definitely worth the extra time to go see this gorgeous temple. (More about temples here)

Virginia House at Christmas

The Christmas season is in full swing here at our house! This weekend B told Santa what he wanted for Christmas and of course he said a train!

Our first Christmas here in Virginia we heard about decorating gingerbread houses at the Virginia House and put it on our Virginia Bucket List. We finally got to go yesterday and it was a lot of fun!

They supplied us with everything we needed to build and decorate the house.
When they gave us our plate of candy B immediately ate the marshmellows and a candy cane!

Our finished house! My husband designed the front porch and I did the roof.
B requested a train on the side, so we cut it out of fondant.

After decorating they took us on a tour of the house and it was all decorated for Christmas! The Virginia House is an old house built in the 16th century in England and the exterior was brought over to Virginia where they put it together.

This nativity was carved in the side of a donkey cart from the 1600's! So cool!
The library had a special surprise for the kids....Santa!
We love visiting the Virginia House!

Don't forget to enter the Caseapp giveaway below! It ends tonight at midnight and winner is announced TOMORROW-Dec 6th!

Virginia Safari Park

A couple Saturdays ago we took B to the Virginia Safari Park. To say he loved it would be an understatement! It was one of the places on our Virginia bucket list and it felt so good to be able to cross another thing off.
We heard about this place when we came to Natural Bridge a couple years ago and we knew B would love it when he was older. We bought a bucket of food so we could feed the animals from our car as we drove through the "safari". It was actually kind of scary feeding them at first because the llamas and ostriches were really aggressive! Even when we had our windows up, they would come and look inside our car to see if we had food!

Some of the animals would stick their heads SO FAR into cars to get food! It was crazy!

After the driving part, we walked around a petting zoo. B was really brave and petted the goats and kangaroo!

If you look really close you can see the baby kangaroo inside one of the mom's pouches!
Our favorite part of the entire thing was being able to feed the giraffes! The giraffe we are feeding still has another foot to grow!

We had so much fun and I thought it was better than a regular zoo!
